  • 2021 Titleist Pro V1 & Pro V1x Golf Balls

    On the Range Blog

Somehow, someway, the team behind the scenes are able to improve on the Titleist Pro V1 and Titleist Pro V1x every single time it releases a new model.

The undisputed No.1 Ball in Golf gets better with each passing release.

The new Titleist Pro V1 release date was January 27th, and now Canadian golfers must just sit patiently for spring to arrive before they can give it a true test.

Twenty years ago, the first Titleist Pro V1 was seeded with PGA Tour golfers at the event in Las Vegas, and the Titleist Pro V1 2021 got the same treatment after a two-year development process. It’s the final stage in the testing process for Titleist golf balls, and in front of arguably the toughest critics.

But the votes were in, and in quickly: they loved it.

Rory Sabbatini – the only golfer in the field in 2020 who also played the original Pro V1 in 2000 – immediately switched from the Titleist Pro V1 2019 into the Titleist Pro V1x 2021 as soon as he got his hands on one.

Titleist says it has 74 percent Tour usage, globally, (count Canadian stars Corey Conners, Brooke Henderson, and others amongst them) and between leaning into the feedback from the best players in the world, elite amateurs, and its unparalleled research and development, the new Titleist Pro V1 and Titleist Pro V1x golf balls have been totally overhauled for 2021.

“Our R&D and Operations teams have spent years engineering new technology into each and every component of 2021 Pro V1 and Pro V1x. When it comes to the performance and quality of these products, we will continue to go to every length possible to help golfers play their best and shoot their lowest scores,” said Jeremy Stone, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing.

The biggest change that golfers will be able to see and touch is on the dimple pattern of the Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. It’s the first entirely new pattern since 2011 and is the result of Titleist obsession with improving the flight of the golf ball.

Titleist has designed and tested more than 1,900 aerodynamic patterns, including 60 different iterations of the Titleist Pro V1 2021 388-dimple layout, and more than 30 versions of the Titleist Pro V1x’s 348 dimple design.

“When we find a pattern we like, the next step is making sure we find the best possible version of that pattern by building and testing different variations of dimple depths, diameters, shapes and surface coverages,” said Mike Madson, Titleist R&D’s Director of Aerodynamics & Research Engineering. “It takes years of work – we’ve been working on these new packages for almost a decade – but it is that commitment to research that ensures each golf ball is optimized to fly at its longest and most efficient trajectory.”

Conceptually when you think of a golf ball, it seems pretty straightforward. They all, kind of, look the same. But like a car – four wheels and an engine – they’re all very different once you look under the hood.

The Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x 2021’s technology is along the same line.

“Both of these golf balls have had every single variable that we can change, adjusted,” Jeremy Stone, vice president of Titleist golf ball marketing, said in an interview with GOLF.com.

The three-layer Titleist Pro V1 is made to fly slightly lower and will have a softer feel, while the four-layer Titleist Pro V1x is designed for more spin and will fly slightly higher, while also being slightly firmer.

There is a reformulated core that Titleist is calling the 2.0 ZG Process Core, which helps deliver increased distance. There is a high-flex casing layer, which helps to add speed and lowers long-game spin. The cover is softer and made from cast urethane – the softest, in fact, ever used on a Titleist Pro V1 or Titleist Pro V1x – which will help to increase greenside spin.

“When a golfer chooses Pro V1 or Pro V1x, said Stone, “they are choosing absolute performance.”
